I think this slick Global Fund video made in collaboration with PSI is deceptive.
There are problems for malaria control with fake (counterfeit) drugs, sub-standard drugs, and artemisinin monotherapy in Myanmar.
Conflating these three kinds of problems leads to the overstatement that fake or counterfeit drugs help artemisinin resistance. The text in the video says "counterfeit drugs ... do help malaria parasites making them drug resistant."
Fake and counterfeit drugs have no impact on artemisinin resistance. A cup of tea has as much impact on artemisinin resistance as taking fake drugs. Substandard drugs may be a problem. Artemisinin monotherapy certainly is.
Any comment from PSI Myanmar, the Global Fund, or the Regional Artemisinin resistance Initiative?
