HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) ဟုဆိုရာတြင္ HIV-1 ႏွင့္ HIV-2 ဟူ၍ ခြဲျခားႏိုင္သည္။ HIV-2 မွာ HIV-1 ကဲ့သို႔ ျပင္းထန္ဆိုးရြားျခင္း မရွိဘဲ ေရာဂါျဖစ္ပြား မႈႏႈန္းမွာ အလြန္နည္းပါး လွပါသည္။ ထို႔ေၾကာင့္ HIV ဟုသံုးရာတြင္ HIV-1 ကိုသာ ဆိုလိုျခင္းျဖစ္သည္။
