Dybul doesn't use the word prevention but wants to reduce HIV from epidemic to endemic

If you can watch YouTube, here you can see the Executive Director of the Global Fund Mark Dybul talk for sixteen minutes without using the word ‘prevention’ and, whew, without ‘the end of AIDS’. He does talk about reducing the HIV epidemic to endemic levels. A reasonable goal. bit.ly/1nfDexK Jamie

UNICEF Myanmar statements

I have been looking at the UNICEF Myanmar website and have found a couple off statements that are not true: Firstly, “Myanmar women and children living with HIV doing well” https://tinyurl.com/lw3x66e I don’t think so. And secondly “HIV/AIDS is spreading at an alarming rate in Myanmar.” http://t.co/UXjS84JNFv HIV incidence and prevalence are decreasing and AIDS […]

More on the WHO ART guidelines

Here is more on the newish WHO guidelines on the use of ART. Are the guidelines really that useful? I usually respect WHO guidelines and follow them. But in this case, in a rush to push unproven ‘treatment as prevention’, WHO appears to have not thought out the implications of some of its normative guidance. […]

There are several documents that are missing

There are several documents that are missing On 2 June  I wrote” APCOM @apcom tweeted on 20 May “22-23 May 2014 the City-Based Hidden/ Positive MSM Consultation in Yangon, Myanmar”. Did WHO jump the gun?

No less an organisation than the International AIDS Society has published this review of evidence for starting ART with a CD4 cell count between 350 and 500. There is not much evidence. Did WHO jump the gun by recommending earlier ART? Time, and more studies, will tell. Adherence to ART lower among PWID

Please look at this paper. Adherence to antiretroviral treatment is vital. It appears to be lower among people who inject drugs. How can this be changed? What is being done in Myanmar to change it? https://tinyurl.com/kk9bnkb Jamie

Two gaps identified by the Sec Gen

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon writes: “Failure to reach key populations with evidence-informed and human rights based prevention services represents a critical gap in current efforts to reduce sexual HIV transmission.” “Little progress has been made towards the global goal of reducing new HIV infections among people who inject drugs” There. Any questions? Jamie […]

New report to the United Nations

A new report to the United Nations. I was shocked to read: “The steady decline in HIV prevalence among PWID since it peaked in 2008, reflects the efficacy of programmes for harm reduction including provision of free sterile needle and syringes.” I don’t think there is any scientific evidence for this assertion. Let’s for a […]

Are there any new infections in Cambodia?

HIV incidence or new infections must be almost negligible in Cambodia. Condom distribution is high, the number of brothels has decreased, and access to antiretroviral treatment is almost universal.
