Road safety

This week is some kind of global road safety week. Good to see the Myanmar mainstream media take note of it. Especially after the ‘confusion’ over the number of road deaths over Thingyan. WHO has just released a comprehensive six point strategy. http://www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/publications/road_traffic/save-lives-package/en/ Speed management Leadership on road safety Infrastructure design and improvement Vehicle safety […]

HIV self screening among some key populations in Yangon

You can download a paper on the acceptability of ‘HIV self-testing’ among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Yangon. https://t.co/D8DSaxnZCQ A couple of comments. ‘HIV self testing’ is a misnomer. A screening test is used and people who get positive screening tests still need counselling and HIV testing. It is ‘HIV […]

Midwives deliver injectables and the big book disappears

The recent Demographic and Health survey in Myanmar found that almost one in three currently married women in the country are using injectable contraceptives. Here is one of them getting services from a midwife. The photo in the article has at its centre “The Big Book”. The ledger that has been the curse of health […]

Crude messaging

Fiona MacGregor is back. Good. Here she has a hard hitting piece in Frontier on crude attempts at antisex and antiabortion messaging. WHO election

We all applaud the implementation of the new National Health Plan 2017 – 21 for Myanmar. Later this month the WHO in Geneva will decide on its new Director General. Dr Tedros is one of the candidates. I’m not sure that op eds and cheerleading will help decide the election. Jamie ++++++++++++++++++ A great step […]

After TB Day

I have waited for a while after World TB Day to comment on these three stories. New drugs and long treatment for multi drug resistant tuberculosis are interesting issues. But a glance at the graph on page 21 of the global TB report http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/250441/1/9789241565394-eng.pdf shows that the number of case notifications in Myanmar is flat. FCTC money

Looks like Myanmar was selected as one of the countries to get funding for implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. http://www.who.int/fctc/mediacentre/news/2017/fctc2030-parties-announced/en/ Anyone know how much money is involved? Any plans for civil society participation? Jamie
