3MDG Fund builds buildings

I remember when the 3MDG Fund used to give grants for community action against the three disease. Now they build buildings. This will increase the burn rate.

The 3 MDG (Three Millennium Development Goal) Fund said it will fund US$3.1 million for the fight against TB and the construction of out-patient departments at Aung San TB hospital in Yangon and Patheingyi TB hospital in Mandalay.

People can carry out laboratory tests and receive treatments at the new outpatient departments free of charge. The out-patient departments are expected to open in 2018 and will receive 100-150 patients and run five days in a week. TB patients who are in need of intensive care and patients with drug-resistant TB will be transferred to these out-patient departments.

Each four-story out-patient department is comprised of a laboratory room, a medical store, a clinic, an X-ray room, a counselling room and an emergency room. In addition, a two-story laboratory building with bio-safety level-3 will be built in Yangon. That facility can carry out TB screening and advanced laboratory tests for patients with drug-resistant TB.

The government will increase its budget spending to 2.5 percent to combat TB, during three years. The ministry has set a target of reducing TB transmission to 40 percent by 2020 and drug-resistant TB transmission to five percent from 2015 to 2020.

The number of male TB patients is higher than that of female patients. Myanmar is one of the countries in South East Asia with the most TB transmission. The country is seeing the increase number of drug-resistant TB patients. About 1.4 million people died of TB in the world, 400,000 of whom were infected with HIV. About 190,000 people are drug-resistant TB patients and 140,000 children died of TB, according to the National TB Project.
