David Kato Vision & Voice Award
Nominations close November 1st!

Award to be presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions in advocating for the rights of LGBTI individuals, accompanied by a grant of US$10,000.

On 26 January 2011, the world was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of David Kato’s brutal murder in his home in Uganda. An internationally recognized human rights advocate working for Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), David campaigned tirelessly for human rights and particularly for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in Uganda and across Africa.

“David Kato was a hero not just to LGBT Ugandans, but to all Ugandans, and to all supporters of human rights worldwide.” said Frank Mugisha, David’s friend, colleague and Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), “The death of David will only be honoured when the struggle for justice and equality is won.”

In recognition of his life and courage, and the continued struggle of LGBTI individuals around the world, the David Kato Vision & Voice Award was established by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) – along with other partners including the Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF), Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), and ILGA-Europe. Accompanied by a one-time grant of US$10,000, this award will be presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions in advocating for the sexual rights of LGBTI individuals.

This award is in part supporting David’s legacy—continuing to promote human rights, particularly for LGBTI people in environments where they face increased rejection, marginalization, isolation and persecution. The inaugural award recipient will be announced on Human Rights Day (10 December 2011) and presented with the award during an annual event in London, United Kingdom at the end of January 2012.

Nominations for the award can be submitted until 1 November 2011. An individual can be self nominated or be nominated by an individual or organization familiar with the nominee’s work. Nominations must be completed online and include two (2) letters of support from organizations familiar with the nominee’s work.
