AIDS 2016 in Durban

I only attend International AIDS Conferences if they are a short distance from where I live. Or if they are held in my homeland Canada. When they are a long way away I have to follow them online. Here are some observations.

I don't know why a white South African actor with an American accent was chosen for a keynote at the Opening Session. She didn't mention sex workers. And she said that the virus is not only spread through sex. Charlize Theron funds an outreach project for youth empowerment but the word 'sex' does not appear on the project website. See for yourself:

David Wilson of the World Bank is never afraid to speak truth to power. Watch the last one minute of this video to see what he thinks of the end of AIDS, treatment as prevention, and treating our way out of the epidemic.

Then the Lancet published an assessment of global trends in incidence, prevalence, treatment, and death. Global HIV incidence is almost unchanged in the last ten years.

Look at the graph on page 4. You cannot see any impact of treatment as prevention. TasP is dead.

Finally, there was much discussion of the decriminalisation of sex work. Especially in South Africa. This would be a big step forward in the realization of labour rights and human rights for sex workers throughout the world.
