We read everywhere that artemisinin resistant malaria not only kills many people in Myanmar, but is a threat to India and Africa if it 'spreads' there. A lot of money is being spent on containing this 'threat'.

There is little evidence that any drug resistant malaria ever spread from Asia to Africa. Artemisinin resistance may arise de novo. Here is a paper demonstrating the phenomenon.
