Battle lost

If enforcement of no smoking zones is the most progressive move that Myanmar can make in tobacco smoking reduction then the battle of tobacco control is already lost.

Public health officers will attend a three-day workshop this week on the Control of Smoking and Consumption of Tobacco Products Law and the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), a senior official said.

The “Workshop for State and Regional Personnel for Enforcement of Tobacco Control Legislation” will be conducted by the Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw from Thursday to Saturday.

“Public health officers are getting the training because they have little understanding of the law,” said Daw Mya Lay Nwe, deputy director of the Non-communicable Diseases Control Unit and manager of the National Tobacco Control Programme.

She said the training is expected to improve the officers’ ability to control smoking and consumption of tobacco products.

The trainees are also expected to be more active in communicating and coordinating with other government agencies in the anti-tobacco campaign.

“Senior public health officers from all states and regions and from the 15 union ministries are expected to attend the training,” she said.

Speakers at the workshop will include experts on local anti-tobacco laws and the provisions of the World Health Organization’s FCTC.

“We will give them technical support in establishing tobacco-free zones in their states and regions,” Daw Mya Lay Nwe said.

At a national seminar in Nay Pyi Taw in June, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi called for schools and universities to be made free of drugs, cigarettes, tobacco and alcohol.
