The [him] moderator pointed out two major problems with animations created by the WEB.foundation in a posting at http://www.hivinfo4mm.org/blog/_archives/2011/5/12/4815379.html. African characters instead of Asians were used and nothing was said about injecting drug use. In the opinion of the moderator, African experience cannot simply be transferred to Myanmar and African videos dubbed into Burmese will have limited impact. The moderator received the following email from Karin van Paasen of the WEB foundation.

Thanks for your comments. WEB.foundations has developed the animations with a team of specialists and they have made well-considered decisions.
Due to the fact that making this animations was very expensive we have decided to have these animations dubbed insead of making new animations for different countries. From our experience and evaluations it was no problem at all the animations have an African appearance. The content of the animations is the most important. The animations are used in all kind of countries in Asia, like China, Thailand and it was never a problem.
Because the animations were initially created for children, both the medici as the anthropologist and sexologist found it not correct to talk about drugs and needles, because children might be frightened forever of needles that are used for blood transfusion and secondly they are almost never confronted direct with drug addicts who use needles. You have to make measured and relevant decisions as you create this for children. In the practice the animations are used for adults and youngsters too, because there is a lack of this kind of simple clear animations. We had to make a lot of choices in the stories.
