HIV/AIDS Education Program, China Border

BWU has been running a pilot HIV/AIDS education program over the past few months and the goal is for one-year program. So far the program has been effective in providing important services and relaying information to the populations at risk (i.e. the young women sex workers from Burma).

BWU started this pilot program after its members in the area realized the need for educating these “at risk” women. The BWU members involved with this program have been trained by Save the Children and EMPOWER on HIV/AIDS education and have the capacity to do this work. Through the project, the BWU has been able to reach out to approximately 75-100 women sex workers from Burma. Many have stated that prior to their exposure with the BWU’s project, many had never been instructed in women's health, HIV/AIDS, and other women related issues.

BWU members assist these women by providing condoms, vitamins, interpretation, nutritional foods to those who are ill, transportation service, organizing and facilitating workshops on women's health including personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). Retreats have been arranged for women to build trust and understanding of each other. Clinic visits, and other emergency assistance have also been provided under the program.
