Critical Issues for Integration In Nargis Response

Experience from other natural disasters has shown the importance of integrating issues related to:

* Reproductive health needs that don’t stop for an emergency
* Increased vulnerabilities that result from physical displacement, broken family support systems and loss of livelihoods, especially for women and girls
* Risks of sexual violence and the need for prevention, monitoring and response
* Ensuring continuity of care and support for people living with HIV and access without discrimination to relief supplies
* Continuation of prevention activities for HIV, including safe blood and condoms
* Protection and support for all orphans and vulnerable

In Myanmar, the community of people living with HIV along with their partners have already demonstrated great solidarity. Self-help groups and community organizations are reaching out and connecting members to assistance.

Using global inter-agency tools, community groups, national and international NGOs and the UN have organized HIV and women’s sub-groups and are developing strategies to ensure these issues are fully integrated into the Cluster approach.
