Control plan

I'm sure there is a translation issue involved here. The national strategic plan for HIV is not an eradication plan. It is not an elimination plan. It's a control plan.

But what, exactly, is the news here.

The Ministry of Health and Sports is planning to spend US$380 million (508.1 billion kyat) for a project to make a big dent in HIV nationally, in cooperation with other donor organizations.

The National HIV Eradication Strategic Project (2016-2020) honours a political pledge and is intended to build on the success of the National Strategic Project-2.

To make rapid progress, the strategy will prioritise reaching those most vulnerable to contracting the virus in an effort to make rapid progress in reducing the spread of the disease.

It will also aim to protect and promote the human rights and gender equality of people living with HIV, those who inject narcotic drugs, men who have sex with men, sex workers and their sex partners, other geographical and demographical target groups and those who suffer the consequences of HIV-related cases.

HIV is on the list of the major diseases to be eradicated under the National Health Project. In 2016, the ministry spent US$15 million to purchase ART and other medicines to treat HIV infected patients and US$1 million to collect methadone.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS has donated about half of the funds for the fight against AIDS, TB and malaria.

In addition, the ministry is implementing a national strategic project (2016-2020) to fight malaria, TB and HIV. By 2020, the Global Fund will have contributed US$497 million for the national strategic project (2016-2020).
