Declination reported by Xinhua

The use of English by the official China news agency is always interesting. The [him] moderator's dictionary defines 'declination' as 'the angular deviation of a compass needle from true north'.

The agency reports on the Minister of Health's 'unique distinction' again.

YANGON, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has achieved a unique distinction of bringing about a gradual declination of HIV prevalence in the country over the past decade, said official daily New Light of Myanmar Friday.

Quoting Minister of Health Dr. Kyaw Myint, the report said the country's HIV prevalence rate dropped from 0.94 percent in 2000 to 0.67 percent in 2007 and to 0.61 percent in 2009.

Kyaw Myint attributed the achievement to multisectoral coordinated efforts of all implementing partners and the entire community.

Besides the strong national commitment towards the fight against HIV/AIDS and support from Three Disease Fund, Myanmar has successfully gained round 9 global fund grants in 2010, Kyaw Myint told a ceremony marking the World AIDS Day 2010 in Nay Pyi Taw Thursday.

With all these achievements, the minister assured that prevention, treatment and care activities could be momentously scaling up in the coming years.

He urged all the implementing partners to keep on the speed of fighting against HIV/AIDS so as to maintain the current achievement while giving equal weight on scaling up the implementation of prevention and and treatment activities.

There are 11 local non-governmental organizations (NGO), 21 international NGOs and 7 United Nations agencies actively collaborating with Myanmar's ministry of health in responding to HIV/AIDS.

Myanmar is also actively participating in the ASEAN work program in HIV/AIDS and Mekong regional HIV/AIDS projects as well as global and regional activities initiated by various UN agencies.

AIDS is one of the priority diseases of Myanmar's national health plan and prevention and care activities for HIV/AIDS are being implemented as a national concern.

YANGON, December 3 (Xinhua) -- AIDS victims in Myanmar will get double treatment aid in terms of medicine provided by the Global Fund (GF) which is to return to Myanmar next year more than five years after it suspended its assistance to the country, the local weekly 7-Day News quoted an official of the UNAIDS as reporting Friday.

Over 40,000 people living with HIV/AIDS will be provided with increased anti-retroviral therapy (ART) drugs through GF which is to extend 100 million U.S. dollars' financial aid to fight the disease under a five-year plan starting next January.

Besides the strong national commitment towards the fight against HIV/AIDS and support from the Three-Disease Fund, Myanmar has successfully gained round 9 global fund grants in 2010, according to Myanmar Minister of Health Dr. Kyaw Myint.

Over the period of the GF's pull-out of Myanmar, a new Three- Diseases (3-D) Fund was developed in 2006 as a compensation by a group of six donors -- the European Commission, Sweden's Sida, the Netherlands, United Kingdom's Department for International Development, Norway and Australia's Aus AID.

Myanmar has achieved a unique distinction of bringing about a gradual declination of HIV prevalence in the country over the past decade.

The country's HIV prevalence rate dropped from 0.94 percent in 2000 to 0.67 percent in 2007 and to 0.61 percent in 2009.

There are 11 local non-governmental organizations (NGO), 21 international NGOs and 7 United Nations agencies actively collaborating with Myanmar's ministry of health in responding to HIV/AIDS.

The UNAIDS estimated that about 238,000 people were living with HIV/AIDS in Myanmar in 2009 with 17,566 estimated AIDS deaths and 17,101 new infections that year.
