Democratic Voice of Burma reports on female sex work

Now THIS is a posting that is bound to provoke comment from [him] readers.

The [him] moderator welcomes comments at hiv.information.for.myanmar at gmail.com about the NLD member’s opinion of one string blouses and adornment. Or MiMi’s thought that sex work is easy and not tiring. Or closing only the sex work venues run by junta cronies while allowing others to remain open.

Young female prostitutes on the increase in Burma

Sep 26, 2006 (Democratic Voice of Burma) - Due to the tightening economic hardship, the number of young female prostitutes is on the increase in Burma, according to volunteers who are working for the rights of women inside Burma.

Previously, young women used to work in night clubs and karaoke bars but now they are becoming so daring as to open their business at the flats.

“The reason is, as there are no (proper) jobs to do, they only have jobs which are easy and not tiring,” one of the volunteers, Mimi told DVB. “It is not even the karaoke (bar) anymore. It is more like the massage parlour. There are many women like that these days.”

“There are quite a lot of them. Some of them are married,” said NLD women member Naw Ohn Hla. “The woman is fetched at night and come home at 11-12pm. The man is not working but his wife is finding money for him. Some people might even forget that they are living in Burma. Their blouse has only one string. They are wearing this kind of thing. By looking at the way they adorn themselves, you know that they are that type of women straight away.”

They said that the increasing problem of prostitution also making HIV/AIDS worse and urged the authorities to close karaoke bars and pleasure halls run by the cronies of the military junta.
