Dengue getting worse

Many articles by @ElevenMyanmar are confusing. In the extreme. Here I think the journalist confused dengue with dengue hemorrhagic fever. They call it DHF.

Dengue *cases* in 2018 were probably 23,000 and the number of deaths from severe dengue (including dengue hemorrhagic fever or DHF), was 112. It is getting worse, not better.

The WHO has designated Myanmar as Grade-I, as Myanmar sees the highest DHF transmission rate among Asean countries, according to the Public Health Department.

The DHF remains a public health problem. In addition to high child hospitalization and mortality rates, the country has four kinds of DHF virus. The DHF transmission is reported not only in urban area but also in rural area. Myanmar is ranked “A” as the country has above-mentioned features. Last year, the number of DHF patients was around 23,000 with 112 deaths reported. As a matter of fact, the DHF transmission will go down if we carry out prevention and control against DHF effectively, said an official of the Public Health Department.

According to the WHO’s report, the world countries including Myanmar see a significant increase in DHF transmission. In 2017, there were 31,288 DHF cases and 192 deaths.

During the first-six month of 2018, there were over 4,000 DHF cases and eight deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.

Last year, there were 197 DHF cases in Yangon in January, 113 in February, 100 in March, 99 in April and 162 in May, according to the Yangon Region Public Health Department.

The number of DHF cases is increasing annually. On average, more than 10,000 people are infected with DHF, 60 per cent of whom die every year.
