Disabilities?

Are there any other reports from Myanmar on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities?

People with disabilities face more violence under junta rule, says the Myanmar Coordination Committee for Equal Rights of People with Disabilities.

People with disabilities are not provided with aid and have lost almost all their rights, including access to education, healthcare and job opportunities, as well as right to live since the coup, said U Zaw Lin Tun, chair of MCERP.

The disabled are suffering physical and mental impacts since the coup because they have lost the rights they had already received, he said.

Military forces commit violence against people with disabilities or arrest them without reason in conflict-affected areas, he said.

“Junta forces shoot when a person who is hard of hearing does not stop when ordered because they accuse them of trying to flee. Or if someone speaks with a stammer, they assault or torture them when they do not answer immediately. People with disabilities become victims in such situations,” he said.

He added that people with disabilities have lost the right to receive legal aid and justice if they are robbed or face sexual violence at home or in the community.

The junta said at a meeting on October 25 that it had reserved a fund of K3 billion to support people with disabilities and pledged to provide them with aid, but no one had received any aid, U Zaw Lin Tun said.

People with disabilities are estimated to comprise 12.8 percent of the population, based on a 2019 survey, but the figure may have risen since the coup, say organisations that help the disabled.

[The report did not mention that December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.]
