Few people have even seen this declaration and no one uses it in their daily work. The ASEAN declaration has had no impact on the epidemic or the response to it in the region. No more energy should be wasted on it.

MANILA, Philippines — President Benigno S. Aquino III is leaving for Bali, Indonesia, to attend the 19th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Summit on November 16-19, 2011. It will be his 13th foreign travel since he assumed the Presidency on June 30, 2010. The Summit is an annual meeting of the ASEAN heads of state and government to tackle economic and cultural developments in Southeast Asia. This year’s theme is, “ASEAN Community in a Global Community of Nations.”
President Aquino will discuss with ASEAN Leaders the Agreement on the establishment of the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance in disaster management, ASEAN connectivity in relation to the establishment of an ASEAN Community by 2015, and the participation of external partners. They are expected to renew the declaration on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and celebrate the 10th year of the ASEAN Declaration on HIV and AIDS. They may also decide on the bid of Myanmar to chair the ASEAN in 2014.
President Aquino will also attend two other meetings to be held in conjunction with the 19th ASEAN Summit – the ASEAN-Plus-3 Summit with Japan, China, and South Korea, and the 6th East Asia Summit, to be attended by ASEAN leaders and those of Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, as well as the Presidents of Russia and the United States.
ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration by its Founding Fathers – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on January 7, 1984, Vietnam on July 28, 1995, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Myanmar on July 23, 1997, and Cambodia on April 30, 1999.
We wish President Benigno S. Aquino III and members of his Delegation bon voyage and a safe trip to Bali, Indonesia, for the 19th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Leaders’ Summit. We wish them all the best and success in all their endeavors. MABUHAY!
