Ministry hands out vitamins to pregnant women

The Health Ministry on Wednesday began distributing free prenatal vitamins to pregnant women to ensure the health of their babies by aiding brain development at birth and preventing birth defects, Health Minister U Myint Htwe said.
“We are distributing 240,000 bottles of prenatal vitamins to all regions and states. Each pregnant woman will be given a bottle, which contains 180 capsules, and they have to take them for six months,” he said on Wednesday on the sidelines of a national meeting on nutrition promotion.
When they (pregnant women) come to rural health departments or township hospitals for pregnancy checkups, we will give them prenatal vitamins,” he added.
The vitamins, which were donated by a foreign organisation, will be distributed to about 1 million pregnant women across the country in the next six months.
This is part of a five-year national nutrition plan being implemented by the government with the help of international aid agencies.
“Everybody needs to know about nutrition and health. Without it, we can’t do anything,” U Myint Htwe said.
He urged the ministers in all regions and states to support the programme.
“One strategy cannot work everywhere,” U Myint Htwe said. “There might be social or transportation problems or we may lack human resources. We need to act according to the specific situation.” – Translated
