First seventy townships

I assume that equity (in addition to readiness) were taken into consideration in choosing the first seventy townships for implementation of the national health plan. So some of the townships chosen should be the least healthy or the sickest.

The names of townships which are included in the first phase of Myanmar's national health project (2017-2021) will be announced at the end of this month, said Dr Thant Sin Tun, assistant secretary of the Ministry of Health and Sports and the leader of the group for designing the project.

Meanwhile, coordination is being sought from organisations working for the healthcare of ethnic groups in the country to provide healthcare services in remote areas, he added.

"Some parts of Myanmar are very remote. The ministry cannot reach out to many parts of the country which are remote or without easy access. The associations working there may be formed with ethnic groups, and there are also local social organisations. When we met with them, but where can they provide healthcare services? If the health department provides those services, how will they cooperate with us? Another option is that we provide infrastructure and they should provide workforce. However, if that is so, the staff from various ethnic groups and the regulations adopted by the ministry may or may not be consistent. But we are coordinating this issue to ensure consistency. Seventy townships to be included in the first phase project will be announced at the end of March," said Dr Thant Sin Tun.

The first five-year national health project will be implemented from 2017 to 2021 in the above townships, including rural and faraway areas. On October 12 last year, Nay Pyi Taw held a ceremony to unveil the plan to discuss and draw the national health project (2017-2021). In July 2015 also, a national level health conference took place in Nay Pyi Taw promising to adopt inclusive health coverage system for everyone by 2030.
