Germany funds HIV/AIDS project in Myanmar

Yangon: Germany will provide $870,000 to the United Nations Children's
Fund for HIV/AIDS prevention program in Myanmar, UNICEF said in a
statement released in Yangon late Friday.

The German fund will support UNICEF's work with local nongovernmental
organizations, in providing life skills and HIV/AIDS prevention education
programs for out-of-school youth in Myanmar, the statement said.

Myanmar currently has about 330,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and the
prevalence rate among people aged 15 to 49 years is estimated at 1.2
percent, it said.

The UNICEF program, focusing on youths aged 10-17, will operate in
townships that are particularly affected by HIV/AIDS and where youths who
are not attending school do not normally have access to alternative
learning opportunities, the statement said.

A UNICEF statement issued on Saturday confirmed that Germany has donated $870,000 to the U.N. Children's Fund for fighting AIDS through prevention programs aimed at youngsters who are out of school in Myanmar.

UNICEF said the funds would be used to teach youngsters aged 10 and 17 prevention methods for HIV. These youngsters would also be taught various other skills. The statement added that the program would operate in 20 townships particularly affected by HIV. Learning opportunities in these townships are few and far between.

Myanmar has about 330,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. The prevalence rate of the disease in the 15-49 age group is 1.2 percent here. Last year Germany had donated $1 million to UNICEF to improve the primary education in the country.

YANGON, Myanmar -- Germany has donated $870,000 to the U.N. Children's Fund toward AIDS prevention programs for non-schooling youngsters in Myanmar, a UNICEF statement said Saturday.

The funds will help three local nongovernment organizations implement plans to teach various skills and HIV/AIDS prevention to youngsters aged between 10 and 17.
    
The program will operate in 20 townships particularly affected by HIV, where school dropouts normally have little access to learning opportunities, the statement said.

There are approximately 330,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Myanmar. The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate among people aged 15-49 is estimated to be 1.2 percent, it said.

Germany donated $1 million to UNICEF last year to help improve access to primary education in Myanmar.

Germany to aid Myanmar education program against HIV/AIDS

Germany will extend an aid which worth over 80,000 U.S. dollars to Myanmar to help implement an education program against HIV/AIDS being launched by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in cooperation with local society, the Khit Myanmar weekly reported Thursday.

Using the German aid, the UNICEF will jointly implement with three local social organizations education program in 20 townships threatened by HIV/AIDS, the report said, adding that the program is mainly aimed at youths.

Under the program, the UNICEF will provide education on prevention against the disease to children of school-going age and those who stay out of school, it said.

Myanmar and the UNICEF are implementing a five-year project ( 2006-2010) in Myanmar covering a wide range of sectors. Using 106 million U.S. dollars allotted by the UNICEF, the projects planned for this year are basic healthcare for children and improvement of their nutrition, education, prevention of HIV/AIDS, availability of clean and safe drinking water in some townships in need as well as protection of children from being unjustly exploited, according to the Public Relations Department.

Myanmar started cooperating with the UNICEF in 1950 with an anti- leprosy campaign as their the first cooperation project.
