In Myanmar 20 percent to 40 percent of pregnant women suffer from diabetes, according to a nationwide survey.

In the world also, 199 million women are suffering from diabetes and the number is likely to reach 303 million by 2040, according to data from the World Health Organization.

Diabetic women patients need to take care while birthing as the condition complicates labour. One in seven is likely to suffer from gestational diabetes-GDM while being pregnant.

Suffering from diabetics during pregnancy can have consequences on not only mothers but also their children. Those consequences include miscarriage, hard labour, immature births and eclampsia, child obesity, abnormal body growth, and child diabetes. Severer consequences include stroke, amputation, blindness, short lifespan and kidney failure. GDM, however, can be cured through changes in patterns of lifestyle.
