Gabriel Jaramillo, General Manager of the Global Fund, recently travelled to Myanmar, where strong gains have been achieved against HIV and AIDS, TB and malaria. Through Global Fund support, more than 650,000 long-lasting insecticide nets have been distributed, more than 39,000 people are now on antiretroviral treatment, and 130,090 new TB cases have been detected and treated (2011).

Mr. Jaramillo met with the Minister of Health of Myanmar, Prof. Dr. Pe Thet Khin, and discussed the collaboration between Myanmar and the Global Fund, as well as the need to address the need for more funding. Those receiving anti-retroviral treatment are only a portion of the 120,000 who need it.

In addition, Mr. Jaramillo had the opportunity to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy and member of parliament, to talk about the key role of parliamentarians in policy development and tell her about Global Fund’s work in Myanmar. He also explained how Global Fund’s work can build local capacity and help in the involvement of Civil Society in the fight against the diseases.

The Global Fund is currently supporting the renovation of 50 warehouses in Myanmar, for which Mr. Jaramillo attended the re-inauguration of two of them in Yangon. Storage facilities renovations are crucial to ensure quality management of medicines and medical supplies. The Global Fund key investments include renovation, procurement of warehouse equipment and capacity building in stock management. With this support and that of other partners, a total of 59 warehouses will be able to provide US$80 million worth of medicines and health supplies.
