Soros to officially offer aids to Myanmar

After his meetings with President U Thein Sein and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, one of the world’s richest Billionaire George Soros has agreed to set up an organization in Myanmar to officially offer aids to the country, according to a press release by the Open Society Foundations.

George Soros, together with his family, visited Myanmar from 26 December 2011 to 3 January 2012, and met with President U Thein Sein, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, presidential advisors and representatives from civil societies.

He held discussions over changes and reform process in Myanmar with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

He said although his foundations had been supporting the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar, he had never met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi before.

Myanmar Project of the Open Society Foundations of Soros has been working to increase the awareness of situation in Myanmar and offering aids to ethnic minorities, women and youths since 1994.

As a result of his visit, Soros will be able to officially offer aids to help build an open society in Myanmar.

The Open Society Foundations has been cooperating with the people in over 70 countries across the country for justice, human rights, education, health and freedom of expression.
