About 50 students fall ill during event to incinerate narcotics in Shan State capital, Taunggyi
About 50 students fainted or became dizzy in the Shan State capital, Taunggyi, on June 26 at an event to incinerate narcotics to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, said the Taunggyi Township branch of the Myanmar Red Cross Society.
Volunteers from Taunggyi and Lawksawk townships and Red Cross members provided first aid and helped to transport the students to the Sao San Tun Hospital.
“Six were admitted to hospital and are recovering,” said an official from Taunggyi Township Myanmar Red Cross Society.
SHAN News (Burmese) reported that more than 30 students fainted, most of them girls, and 13 were admitted to hospital.
The students are from the No. 2 Basic Education High School in Taunggyi, but the number who attended the event was not mentioned.
A Taunggyi Township Red Cross official said the students fainted because they had to stand in the sun for a long time, but residents blamed fumes from burning drugs for making them ill.
A resident said school children should not have attended the ceremony.
