Millions and millions served

At this burn rate, the 3MDG Fund sure doesn't have to worry about spending all that money they have for 'Maternal Newborn Child Health'. Giving millions to the UN to buy refrigerators ought to make a nice dent in the bank account.

The Three Millennium Development Goal Fund (3MDG) is pleased to announce that it will partner with UNICEF to support the Ministry of Health (MoH) to strengthen across all of Myanmar the refrigeration system for storing vaccines and to accelerate programmes to eradicate child malnutrition in Myanmar.
The US$15 million funding agreement signed today between Mr. Sanjay Mathur, UNOPS Director and Representative in Myanmar and Mr. Bertrand Bainvel, UNICEF Representative to Myanmar, finances a range of interventions that will help strengthen health systems and accelerate service delivery, with a focus on the poorest and most vulnerable communities in Myanmar.
“Myanmar is at a crucial turning point. No intervention can be scaled up and sustained without a significant investment in health systems. Promoting quality health care for every child in Myanmar by strengthening health systems is the surest path to reduce child mortality over time, and fulfil the right of every child to survive and develop to her or his best potential”, said Bertrand Bainvel.
Mr. Sanjay Mathur stated: “We are extremely glad for the partnership with UNICEF. UNICEF brings very substantial health expertise within the areas of vaccination and nutrition and now in further support of the Ministry of Health’s goal to reach Universal Health Coverage.”
Out of the US$15 million 3MDG funding, US$9.7 million will support the MoH’s Expanded Programme on Immunization, by expanding storage volume for essential vaccines. This will enable improved coverage of existing vaccines and also the introduction of new vaccines.
US$3.8 million will support the work of the Ministry of Health in accelerating efforts towards eradicating malnutrition in Myanmar. Working through the National Nutrition Centre, UNICEF will scale-up nutrition interventions at national and state/region levels, and with a focus on 50 Townships with a greater burden of malnutrition. According to UNICEF, nearly 6% of Myanmar children aged under-five are severely underweight, while over 12% are severely stunted and over 2% are severely wasted.
Furthermore, US$1.5 million will enable UNICEF to partner with other UN agencies to strengthen Myanmar’s Health Management Information System and support the MoH in decentralized evidence based health planning nationwide.
This funding is part of a US$20.7 million initiative to support the strengthening of health systems in Myanmar in partnership with four UN agencies (UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF and the WHO) combining their expertise and resources to work with the Ministry of Health and its partners towards the improvement of health status of the people of Myanmar, in particular for women, children and adolescents and underserved communities.
