Some 140 experts working on the AIDS front met in Hong Kong on Tuesday in a three-day meeting to discuss the prevention of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) and how to enhance the efforts in the treatment, care and support.
It is the first of its kind in the Asian region to step up efforts in HIV prevention, treatment, care and support amongst MSM and transgender populations.
Entitled "Action Planning Meeting of Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Populations Multi-City HIV Initiative", the event was jointly organized by Hong Kong's Department of Health, the United States Agency for International Development, organizations under the United Nations system and other regional partners.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director of Health, PY Lam, said the rise in HIV infections among MSM in Hong Kong and the neighboring region over the last few years had alerted us to the importance of vigilance.
In Hong Kong, surveys revealed that HIV prevalence's MSM community was considerably higher than other at-risk populations, such as methadone clinic attendees and social hygiene clinic attendees recorded in the same period, said Lam.
With major participants from six Asian cities including Bangkok, Thailand, Jakarta, Indonesia, Manila, the Philippines and Yangon, Myanmar, the meeting planned to review the current HIV epidemic trends, examine municipal response and identify innovative initiatives in those cities.
Lam said he hoped the meeting can lead to the prioritization of resources for HIV prevention, treatment, care and support amongst MSM through a solid action plan for the six major participating cities.
