Myanmar or Burmese sailor dies in Indonesia

'Burmese' is a better word than 'Myanmarese' in this case. He wonders how often this happens.

Myanmarese sailor dies of HIV in West Kalimantan

Pontianak, West Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - A Myanmarese sailor identified only as Lin, 23, died here on Saturday after being positively confirmed to have been infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

"The late sailor will be cremated here," Commander of the Pontianak Naval Base, Captain Syafrizal told the press on Saturday.

Lin and 12 other crew members of a Myanmarese fishing boat called Tugu 25, were nabbed by the Indonesian Navy`s warship on Natuna Island in December 2005 for illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

Lin was frequently ill during his detention. On July 15, 2006, his blood was tested at the Dr Soedarso general hospital in Pontianak and the blood test result showed that he had HIV.

On Aug 22, 2006, Aye Ko That (23), a Myanmarese sailor died in Jambi after consuming alcoholic beverages and durian fruit during a stop-over in Jambi, Sumatra.

The Myanmarese was a crew member of Pon San Shipping from Singapore. After being hospitalized for one day, Aye Ko That died at the hospital. Medical diagnose showed that he suffered from malaria.

Some 48 foreign fishermen, among others from Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Lao, are currently being detained at the Pontianal Naval Base for poaching.

They are waiting for repatriation arrangements made by their respective countries` embassies.

The Thai embassy in Jakarta is usually quite active in making arrangements for the repatriation of their fishermen, according to Syafrizal. (*)
