NAP Annual Review - Weaknesses of the PMTCT Programme

Today [him] continues a series entitled NAP Annual Review. It is based on powerpoint presentations from the National AIDS Programme Annual Review 30 October through 2 November 2007 that have been sent to him by several sources over the last couple of months. These presentations are big and cannot be sent by email. They can only be downloaded from the [him] website http://www.hivinfo4mm.org.

A presentation from Banmaw township demonstrates three major weaknesses of the PMTCT programme.

The first weakness (or strength for those who believe that women should not have the option to refuse testing) is that nineteen out of twenty women who were offered testing were tested. This looks to the [him] moderator to be very close to mandatory testing.

The second weakness is that last year only two thirds of women who were found to have HIV were given prophylaxis for themselves and their infants. What happened to the others?

Finally, only nevirapine monotherapy was used. This is an outdated regimen. New recommendations were made by WHO two years ago. http://www.who.int/hiv/pub/mtct/pmtct/en/
