NCD risk factors, urbanisation, and poverty in Myanmar

This is a remarkable paper on noncommunicable diseases NCDs in Myanmar.

The researchers looked at classical NCD risk factors in both rural and urban areas of Myanmar. They found that behavioural risk factors like alcohol and tobacco (and even eating few fruits and vegetables) had a tendency to be more common in rural areas. Metabolic risk factors like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure tended to be more common in urban ones.

Other studies have found similar findings with poverty causing the same trends. So urbanisation, riches, and 'modern Asian life' do have an impact on NCD risk factors but not always in the ways we might expect. Myanmar is still largely a rural country.
