HAARP Myanmar prepares to enter a new phase

At the end of 2010, the current contract with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as the contracting agency for HAARP in Myanmar will be up for renewal. AusAID is in the process of defining the next phase of the program.
Since the beginning of 2009, HAARP in Myanmar has cumulatively provided harm reduction services to more than 8000 drug users and their spouses. The program, under the leadership of Dr Ye Shwe Htoon, has achieved impressive outcomes. By mid-2010, services were being delivered at 10 sites, with nearly 1.5 million needles and syringes distributed. HAARP Myanmar can also be credited with reaching out to and providing services at sites where very difficult conditions prevail. The program has also been highly successful in developing key partnerships and referral mechanisms, which support interventions for female substance users and the sexual partners of male IDUs.
