The number of drug abusers is on the increase year by year in conflict areas and gem mining areas in Kachin State, known to be the largest heroin producer in Myanmar, according to 3 MDG.
The organisation says that Myanmar has about 83,000 drug users. Moreover, HIV infection rate has increased to 28.5 percent with Kachin State seeing the highest rate. In the state, local anti-drug bodies are being formed on a self-reliant basis.
"We need to understand the nature that people usually resume drug consumption although they could have stopped their addiction. It is hard to give up drug abuse," said Dr Nanda Myo Aung Wan, manager of National Drug Abuse Control Program.
The rate of HIV outbreak among those aged 15 and above is 0.49 percent while the rate is at dangerous level in the age groups venerable to HIV infection.
In those age groups, HIV infection accounts for over 20 percent of those who use drug injection, 10.4 percent of men who have sex with men and transgendered people and 8.1 percent of female sex workers.
Myanmar is speeding up drug elimination measures by opening 26 major rehabilitation centres, 47 rehabilitation centres and 51 centres for administering methadone.
