Ministry to pay more attention to four highest HIV prevalence areas
Eleven Myanmar
3 December 2019
Ministry of Health and Sports will mainly deal with high HIV transmission rates in Kachin, Shan (north), Sagaing and Yangon, said Dr. Myint Htwe, Union Minister for Health and Sports, at a ceremony to mark the World AIDS Day in Yangon on December 1.
Low outreach, the increases in the number of those who inject drugs, sex workers, men who have sex with men, inmates and migrant workers, may hamper our HIV program. The ministry is dealing with this case. The main problem is narcotic drug. Myanmar is ranked 4th on the list of ten South East Asian countries with HIV transmission rates. I strongly believe that Myanmar’s rank will be lower to eight soon. The number of people living with HIV declined from 29,800 in 2000 to more than 10,000 in 2018. The point is the HIV transmission rate has been on the decline. The number of HIV cases will go down if we make continued efforts. The ministry will pay more attention to key affected populations in four highest HIV prevalence areas. I strongly believe that the number of HIV cases will go down immediately if the ministry can handle those who inject drugs, he added.
The ministry gave Life-Long ART to around 40,000 out of 230,000 people living with HIV in 2011. According to the figures till June, 2017, the ministry gave healthcare to more than 135,000 patients.
According to the ministry’s estimate in 2018, the number of people living with HIV reached 237,000, which accounts for 0.57 per cent of the total populations. The HIV transmission rate has declined to 26 per cent compared with the figures in the past five years while the number of deaths caused by HIV-related diseases, has dropped to 35 per cent.
