PrEP is here

This image shows that it has been almost five years since PrEP was inserted into a draft HIV strategic plan for Myanmar until the first tablet was taken last week. That is a long time. Better late than never I suppose.

Today Myanmar started its first clients on PrEP -- simultaneously at the PEPFAR-supported PSI TOP Clinics, Medical Action Myanmar, and the National AIDS Program Latha Clinic in Yangon with PEPFAR support.

A pill a day, PrEP allows people to take charge of their own HIV prevention. It's 99% effective against sexual transmission and 74% effective against transmission through shared injecting equipment.

It has been a long process to get PrEP off the ground in Myanmar. How can we move faster in the future?

With new innovations like long-acting monthly vaginal rings to reduce HIV risk; Buprenorphine implants on the market, and injectable PrEP just around the corner, we need to fast track these proven interventions that make HIV prevention easier for those at highest risk.

Without leaving women and people who inject drugs behind.

Last week, the USAID HIV/AIDS Flagship (UHF) Project supported the inauguration of the first PrEP clinics in Myanmar. The event opened with remarks from the National AIDS Program(NAP)’s Manager. The participants then visited the NAP Latha PrEP clinic, followed by a visit to UHF partner Population Services International (PSI) and Medical Action Myanmar (MAM)’s new PrEP clinics. They also had a chance to meet with some of the first PrEP clients in Myanmar. The inauguration of the first PrEP clinics mark a major milestone for HIV prevention in Myanmar. UHF is so glad to be the main contributor of this initiative.
