YANGON- The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) is willing to provide healthcare services for prison inmates, according to the meeting with the Health Minister and the ICRC’s new Representative held in Nay Pyi Taw on September 13th.

The ICRC also wants to upgrade hospitals and healthcare departments including healthcare services for mothers and children in Shan, Kachin and Rakhine States together with the Ministry of Health.

Plans are underway to lay down the strategy to provide healthcare services for the prisoners, jointly organized by the Ministry of Health and Sports as well as Ministry of Home Affairs with the aim to provide sufficient healthcare services at prisons across the nation.

Prisoners are most vulnerable and marginalized people with limited access to healthcare services thus the need to better allow prisoners access. In Myanmar, prisons and labour camps are very crowded and the rate of common infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis and cholera have been on the rise.

The Three Millennium Development Gold Fund (3MDG) is now collaborating with UNODC, UNAIDS and WHO to improve the delivery of healthcare services in prisons and labour camps under the supervision of Ministry of Health and Sport as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs.

3MDG carried out the diagnosis of tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis and cholera at the prisons and labour camps. They also financed the construction of basic infrastructures in regards to the health sector as well as they handed over the health clinic in compound of Myitgyina prison in Kachin State to the Ministry of Home Affairs on June 18th.

In Myanmar, there have been a great need for human resources, basic infrastructures and healthcare services at the prisons. Authorities and joint solutions are needed to solve the above problems.

With the aim to promote healthcare activities at the prisons and labour camps, the 3 MDG is now carrying out the elimination of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in collaboration with the health ministry, prison department under the ministry of home affairs, UNODC, UNAIDS and WHO.
