PSI at the ICAAP

Here is a report from PSI. The author talks about a vast audience. How many people are there? Would someone from PSI please send him the papers presented by PSI about Myanmar?

Hopes and Expectations at the Start of the ICAAP

The following post is by Gary Mundy, Senior Regional Researcher for Asia/EE. He is at the 10th International Congress on AIDS in the Asia Pacific (ICAAP) in Busan, South Korea.

Anyong from Busan! This is my first ICAAP so I am not quite sure what to expect. What I am hoping for is a better perspective on where PSI sits within very wide range of NGOs, activists and funders that share a common goal of containing and reducing the HIV epidemic across Asia. One rarely has the opportunity to get such a wide view on the landscape in which we work, and to gain a sense of where we sit within it. It's easy to forget - for me at least - that we are but one part of the jigsaw. I hope to come away knowing a little more about the science, the on the ground efforts dedicated to prevention and treatment and, of course, the politics around HIV.

It is easy to cast a cynical eye on events of this scale ('what to do they actually achieve?') but if it means that we come away thinking a little more deeply about our work and having a greater connection with those who are working towards a common goal - whether that be in the street, the boardroom, or the laboratory - then I think it is more than justified.

I am also looking forward to spending a few days with colleagues who I too rarely get the chance to speak or spend time with, and to seeing their work presented to such a vast audience. With representation from India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, this is a great opportunity for PSI to share the great work that it is doing with a large and diverse communities of interest.

A stimulating and educational three days ahead....

International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP)
August 26-30, 2011

On August 22, 2011, the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia Pacific (ICAAP) will gather nearly 4,000 attendees from throughout the region for the discussion of scientific, programmatic and policy developments in the global response to HIV/AIDS. The largest HIV/AIDS forum in the Asia Pacific region and the second largest in the world, this biennial gathering promotes opportunities for greater regional collaboration and sharing of ideas amongst people infected and affected by HIV in the region. Convened by the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) and UNAIDS, ICAAP10 will be held in Busan, Republic of Korea (RoK).

PSI’s participation at ICAAP10 is a fitting demonstration of the conference theme, “Diverse Voices, United Action.” With attendees from seven countries across Asia, PSI staff will present three oral presentations and 11 posters on its work with both key populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers (SWs) and injecting drug users (IDUs), and interventions such as prevention of mother to child transmission, for general populations.

PSI is at the forefront of HIV-prevention efforts worldwide and is the leading provider of condoms – more than 14 billion since 1987. PSI applies this same commitment in the Asia region, where its field platforms design and implement HIV prevention programs in 11 countries, including Cambodia, China, Central Asia, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam. The focus of most of these programs is to reduce HIV prevalence among the most-at-risk populations (MARP) mentioned above, by promoting HIV-related commodities and services and increasing the adoption of safer behaviors. PSI uses evidence-based techniques to develop tailored interventions to address the HIV prevention needs of these MARP groups. In 2010, PSI was able to avert nearly 30,000 disability-adjusted life years; in other words, PSI added 30,000 years of healthy life to the people it serves across Asia.

PSI currently works to prevent HIV infection in more than 60 countries in Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia.
