Yangon has over 97,000 Chinese and 60,000 Bengalis: Minister

Yangon Region has over 97,000 Chinese and over 60,000 Bengalis out of over 5.6 million people, said Naing Ngan Lin, Regional Minister for Social Affairs in a regional parliament session held on September 20.

He replied to a question raised by MP Mann Aung Ko Min of No.1 Kungyangon Constituency on behalf of Moe Moe Su Kyi, regional minister for immigration and population that how many people including ethnics are living in the region according to census list.

He said, “A total of 521,922 Bamar ethnics, 243,722 Kayin ethnics and 72,395 Rakhine ethnics are living in the region according to household list.”

He added 9,100 Kachin ethnics, 2,274 Kayah ethnics, 23,648 Chin ethnics, 31,726 Mon ethnics and 35,825 Shan ethnics are living in the region according to census list.

“A total of 227,740 Indians, 15,133 Pakistanis, 97,994 Chinese, 477 Monwin, 1,824 Kokant, 145 Kolonlishaw, 740 Bangladeshis, 63,553 Bengalis, 2,182 Nepalese and 47,917 people from other races are living in the region,” he said.

Moe Moe Su Kyi, regional minister for immigration and population said in a regional parliament session held on September 17 that the authorities issued national registration cards to voters in a short time in 1990 general election and 2008 constitutional referendum and they issued the NRC cards to ineligible voters at that time.
