If the Ministry of Health and Sports does not regulate the sale of nicotine vaping equipment then members of the legislative branch will need to do it for them.

Myanmar legislator seeks to regulate e-cigarettes, water pipes

A Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) legislator has filed a bill seeking to regulate e-cigarettes and water pipes.
Dr San Shwe Win, an MP and doctor in Ayeyarwady Region’s Yegyi township, said there is a widespread misconception among Myanmar people about the safety of e-cigarettes, commonly called “vapes”.
“Many say vapes do not cause health problems as these products are imported. But I want everyone around the country to know it is wrong so I submitted this proposal,” he said.
U San Shwe Win said his proposal aims to control the sale of vapes across the country and would require programmes to teach children about the dangers of vaping.
“They are just like cigarettes and do not have many differences. They also have many flavours and scents, which are chemicals that cause more harm,” he said.
These items are advertised as an aid for quitting the smoking habit, but actually their users also become addicted, he said.
Forty-six countries have prohibited e-cigarettes, including the US and England.
Five of the 10 ASEAN countries have also prohibited them, and the remaining four have taken measures to regulate it. Myanmar is the only ASEAN member that has not taken any action against vaping, he said.
He urged Myanmar to make policies, educate the public, coordinate government agencies and social organisations, conduct research, and take action.
US government data showed that from August 2019 to January 7, e-cigarettes caused 52 deaths in the US, and another 2,602 people caught diseases related to vaping. – Translated
