The [him] moderator is tired of asking: “What has trafficking to do with HIV?” His answer is: “Very little.” Action against trafficking requires a multitude of measures which hardly overlap with HIV prevention and care. But any consultation that brings these people in one room at one time is bound to be interesting. Read on.

On 19-21 September 2005, UNESCO Bangkok organized an expert consultation entitled "Promoting Standards for Socio-Cultural Research on the Issues of HIV/AIDS and Trafficking", to discuss the current state of socio-cultural research in the areas of trafficking and HIV/AIDS and suggest ways to move forward.
The expert consultation consisted of plenary sessions and small group discussions around the state of socio-cultural research, the influence of outside ideologies on the region, research methodologies, ethics and governance, cultural competence, work with vulnerable populations, research priorities and the utilization of research in HIV/AIDS and trafficking interventions.
- Research on broader issues related to HIV/AIDS and trafficking, such as gender and sexuality;
- Longer term and more in depth qualitative studies, particularly with groups such as ethnic minorities; and
- Operations research to rigorously evaluate existing interventions.
Follow up from the consultation will include liaising and advocating with donor agencies to fund higher quality socio-cultural research, and to use it more effectively in the design, delivery and evaluation of HIV and Trafficking interventions.
