Road safety figures

The following piece by Eleven Myanmar is just full of numbers. But it notes a decrease in road crashes, road injuries, and road deaths from 2017 to 2018. That would be good news. But ...

The numbers have been examined by road traffic researcher Felix Siebert. He notes that fatalities are much too high for the number of passenger miles in Myanmar. He also finds a high probability of under-reporting as WHO estimated more than 10,000 road traffic fatalities for Myanmar in 2016, while traffic police registered only half of that. The WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety reported 4887 road related fatalities for 2016. The figure for 2018 would represent an increase of 300 deaths.
