The numbers have been examined by road traffic researcher Felix Siebert. He notes that fatalities are much too high for the number of passenger miles in Myanmar. He also finds a high probability of under-reporting as WHO estimated more than 10,000 road traffic fatalities for Myanmar in 2016, while traffic police registered only half of that. The WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety reported 4887 road related fatalities for 2016. The figure for 2018 would represent an increase of 300 deaths.

There were a total of 17,451 traffic accidents nationwide in 2018, resulting in 5,184 deaths and 26,741 injuries, according to Myanmar Traffic Police Force.
There were 599 deaths and 3,164 injuries from 2,684 accidents in Yangon, 744 deaths and 3409 injuries in 2,243 accidents in Mandalay, 419 deaths and 3,446 injuries 2,033 accidents from Ayeyawady, 367 deaths and 2,799 injuries from 1,610 accidents in Magway, 481 deaths and 2,606 injuries from 1,539 accidents in Sagaing, 529 deaths and 1,680 injuries from 1,184 accidents in Shan, 346 deaths and 1,468 injuries in 875 accidents from Mon, 209 deaths and 957 injuries in 585 accidents from Taninthayi, 170 deaths and 629 injuries in 429 accidents from Rakhine, 196 deaths and 561 injuries from 427 accidents in Kachin, 153 deaths and 605 injuries in 374 accidents from Kayin, 227 deaths and 385 injuries in 342 accidents from Nay Pyi Taw, 47 deaths and 146 injuries from 106 accidents in Chin, 47 deaths and 122 injuries from 88 accidents in Kayah.
There were 474 traffic accidents that occurred on the Yangon-Mandalay highway, resulting in 104 deaths and 883 injuries. There were 27 traffic accidents at No.1 Border Guard Region, leaving 17 people dead and 24 others injured.
There were two traffic accidents at the level crossing, resulting in one death and two injuries.
In Myanmar, there is an average of 48 traffic accidents every day, killing 14 people and injuring 73 others.
In 2017, there were 18,171 traffic accidents nationwide, leaving 5,250 people dead and 29,144 others injured.
