Some answers to the questions posed by a comment box user

Here are some anonymously-submitted answers to the questions posed last week.

Q 1.The total incidence number of AIDS in Myanmar

1) Please note: Incidence is the measurement of NEW infections in a given period (usually 1 year). At present there is not sufficient data available to provide a reliable estimate of incidence.

We therefore refer to prevalence where we have better data (prevalence is the total number of infections - or % - in a population or sub-population). The HIV sentinel surveillance data for 2007 showed the following prevalence:

Female sex workers - 15.6%
Injecting drug users - 29.2%
Men who sex with men - 29.3%
Pregnant women attending antenatal care - 1.4%
New military recruits - 1.3%
New TB patients - 9.8%
Blood donors - 0.4%

In the absence of a population based survey, the general prevalence is calculated using mathematical models. This was done last in 2007 before the above data was available. The estimate of prevalence for the population aged 15 and older was 0.7% for 2007 with a range of 0.5% to 0.9%.

Q 2. Number of  male, female, children infected with HIV.

2) Applying the 0.7% figure give the following estimated numbers of people infected with HIV:
Total 15 years and older - 236,000 (whereof 100,000 were females)
Total Children - 6,000

Q 3.How many  % of patiens are receiving ARV treatments regularly & how many cannot efford to get treatment.
Q 4.Number of  patients at government/private Hospital and polyclinics (Both OPD and IPD) to get treament(per month/year).

3) and 4) It was estimated that about 75,000 people were in need of ARV in 2007. By the end of 2007, a total of 11,000 people were reported to receive ARV (15%). These data are for the government and non-governmental organisations only. These providers give ARV free of charge.
While there are people who are buying ARVs in the private sector, there is no information how many actually do so. Keeping in mind that the costs of ARV are high, is can be assumed that most people who do not receive ARV now would not be able to buy them.

The [him] moderator is still waiting for readers to answer the following two questions:

5.What type of medications they are under treatment mostly?
6. What is the current trend of ARV treatment guidlines practice in Myanmar?
