Health experts have warned travellers to be aware of risks and dangers while driving this holiday season, noting that April has the highest number of injuries and deaths from road accidents in the country, the World Health Organization and Ministry of Health and Sports said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

According to the Road Transport Administration Department, traffic accidents in April – the time of the Thingyan Festival – led to over 3000 injuries and over 600 deaths last year.

Dr Khin Theingyi Myint, deputy medical superintendent of Yangon General Hospital, said the number of injured patients during the Thingyan holidays is higher than normal.

“Most of the patients rushed to the hospital during Thingyan are injured in road accidents. People should take care when they go outside or when they travel,” she said.

The number of injuries and deaths from motorcycle accidents is also high. About 70 percent of severe traffic injury cases and 69pc of deaths were due to motorcycle accidents.

In addition, they urged people to be aware of road safety to prevent accidents, as it is during Thingyan that more people come to visit the country, while Myanmar citizens travel back to their home towns.

Officials urged people to avoid risky behavior, including drinking alcohol while driving and not wearing their seatbelts. They also reminded travellers against using mobile phones while driving, noting that the most severe traffic injury victims admitted to hospital are those who were talking on the phone while driving.

The continued surveillance of crashes, injuries and deaths during the holidays is essential, not only to address this public health problem but also to devise appropriate solutions to be implemented in a timely manner.

The health ministry urged national traffic authorities to strengthen law enforcement on seatbelt wearing and against drunk driving, which would greatly reduce road traffic accidents.

The WHO and the ministry urged officials to have adequate police staff and supporting volunteers, and use technology such as video cameras, CCTV and other law enforcement and traffic control systems to improve road safety during the festive season.

Doctors have also warned people to take the necessary precautions against illnesses, especially skin diseases.
