Time for UNICEF to Turn Over a New Leaf

This was in Irrawaddy comments. Are both the UNICEF and WHO libraries now off limits to the public?

Time for UNICEF to Turn Over a New Leaf

I'm sure you are probably aware that UNICEF Burma has recently moved into the very fancy and expensive Trader's Hotel.

What you may not know is that UNICEF Burma has closed its library to the public following this move.

Before
the move, UNICEF's library was open to the Burmese public. Anyone could
come into the library to check out a book about children's rights,
maternal health, and other important issues (in Burmese or English).

It
was one of the very few libraries in all of Burma where we could have
free access to all kinds of information we could not otherwise obtain.
Even the very poorest people—most of our fellow country people who are
too poor to afford a simple book—could still check out books from
UNICEF to read to their children. To learn and grow.

Why is UNICEF closing its doors to the Burmese people, especially as such an important time in our country's history?

I
hope you will report on this troubling issue and encourage UNICEF to
reverse course, do the right thing, and re-open its doors to all
Burmese people.

If UNICEF refuses to keep its doors open to
Burma's people, we can only conclude that it is, once again, bowing to
the will of Burma's blood-soaked military rulers.

Please tell UNICEF to put Burma's children first.
