JICA focuses on HIV/AIDS training

THE Japan International Cooperation Agency (Myanmar) plans this year to send a second group of Myanmar team leaders specialising in preventing sexually transmitted diseases to Thailand for training.

Dr Hideki Miyamoto, an HIV/AIDS expert at the agency, said the plan was part of three-year program started last year in cooperation with JICA (Thailand) to provide instruction to all such team leaders in Myanmar.

He said those to be sent to Thailand would be selected from a group of 28 team leaders who had attended lectures given by four of the 24 team leaders who had been sent to Thailand for the first overseas training program last September.

The lectures, which were held at the Myanmar Medical Association on Theinbyu Road on December 20 and 21, covered proposal writing and project management.

“The agency hopes to send the second group of team leaders to Thailand in September or October,” Dr Miyamoto said.

Those who attended the lectures were asked to design HIV/AIDS prevention projects suitable to the geographic areas where they worked, and submit them to officials at the agency and the National AIDS Program in mid-January, he said.

“We will analyse whether their projects are suitable for their areas, and we will talk to them about how they would implement the projects,” he said.

The team leaders in the second group sent to Thailand would be expected to teach what they learned to other team leaders in Myanmar, he said, adding that through this method all the team leaders in the country would be exposed to the content of the Thailand trainings by the end of the three-year plan in 2007.
