HAARP Myanmar provides training for law enforcement personnel
HAARP newsletter 11
The Central Training Institute for Police is situated in a village called Zee Pin Gyi, which is located 24 miles east of Mandalay in Central Myanmar. Since August 2009, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Country Office in Myanmar, with the assistance of HAARP, has supported trainings on HIV/AIDS and harm reduction awareness among law enforcement at this institute. To date, 13 training sessions have been completed and 1753 police personnel of different categories (investigating officers, cadet officers and station officers) have been trained using a standard training module. In October 2011, UNODC organized a three-day training in which 49 Township Police Officers were trained. Trainees as well as instructors and leaders of the training institution showed keen interest in antiretroviral treatment (ART), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and treatment and spread of hepatitis C. They were especially keen to learn how to support harm reduction interventions as law enforcement personnel. Active discussions and questions followed each presentation. In December 2011, at the institute’s request, the HAARP Country Program agreed to provide a training of trainers (TOT) for 25 lecturers/trainers of the Police Academy. This will support the sustainability of capacity building for law enforcement personnel.
