Genocide is a health issue. Here goes. Watch the response to this posting.
Two years ago the Tatmadaw and Rakhine people increased violence against Muslims in Rakhine in Myanmar, most of whom self identify as Rohingya. There is good evidence that ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and genocide occurred.
I have heard rationalisations: people of other ethnicities suffered, victims were not citizens, Muslims were not completely wiped out so it was not genocide, ARSA 'started it', and more. I have lost a few friends, people I thought I knew, who rationalise the atrocities.
When rationalisation fails, genocide denial occurs. Legal arguments are brought out, ad hominem attacks begin, whataboutism abounds, and mainstream international media, foreigners, and the UN are blamed. Bangladesh bashing, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and nationalism increase.
I hear more Myanmar people, including Burmans, taking progressive stands on the Myanmar Rohingya genocide. What next? Will those responsible be held accountable? Will rationalisation and genocide denial be addressed? Will the delusional dream of refugee return continue?
It is up to you, friends.
Jamie
