MYANMAR: HELPING HIV/AIDS SURVIVORS

In Myanmar (Burma), an estimated 20,000 people die from HIV/AIDS every year. About 240,000 people in the country are living with HIV/AIDS, but only 15 percent of those who need antiretroviral treatment are medically covered.

UMCOR is supporting its partner Church World Service in a project with Myanmar Positive Group (MGP) to improve access to medical treatment for HIV/AIDS survivors. MGP is a network of people living with HIV/AIDS that oversees 87 self-help groups in 77 Myanmar townships. As part of the project, antiretroviral treatment and educational literature will be distributed to 1,600 HIV/AIDS survivors in cyclone-hit areas where health care services were severely affected.

An HIV/AIDS training curriculum will be developed to address Myanmar's current HIV/AIDS crisis and workshops will be created to train participants in counseling and support services. You can contribute to this project by giving to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450.
