UNAIDS online consultation

UNAIDS has launched an online consultation to 'refine' itself. Please feel free to join.

I'm going to suggest closing most country offices and forgetting about the 'joint programme' of all those UN cosponsors. That leaves theUNAIDS secretariat in Geneva and country offices in the countries where incidence and burden is high.

Following through with an ambitious agenda to end AIDS

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) plays a central role in the global effort to to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030, a target that sits within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Meeting this global ambition requires UNAIDS to adapt to a rapidly changing context and contribute to the comprehensive UN reform agenda of the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

A Global Review Panel that aims to refine and reinforce UNAIDS

The UNAIDS Board has instructed UNAIDS to convene a Global Review Panel to address the Joint Programme’s challenges—to make recommendations on how to make UNAIDS sustainable and fit for purpose. It is convened by Helen Clark, Chair of the United Nations Development Group and Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director, and co-chaired by Awa Coll-Seck, Minister of Health of Senegal, and Lennarth Hjelmåker, Ambassador for Global Health of Sweden.

The Global Review Panel will not focus on the ‘what’ of the Joint Programme—UNAIDS’ role in the global AIDS response is well-reflected in its 2016–2021 Strategy—but rather ‘how’ UNAIDS works, and how it can be refined and reinforced to better support countries to end AIDS. The Panel will focus specifically on three fundamental pillars of the Joint Programme: joint working, governance and financing & accountability.

Virtual Stakeholder Consultation

The leadership of the Global Review Panel is committed to making this process as inclusive as possible. A Virtual Stakeholder Consultation, lasting for 12 days from the 30 January to 10 February, will ensure everyone has an opportunity to have a say in how to improve the UNAIDS.

The online consultation is open to all, and invites participants to engage in meaningful online discussions on several key questions surrounding the three fundamental pillars. Each topic will contain a set of guiding questions to frame the discussion. There will also be a general discussion forum whereby participants will be able to share any additional advice they may have.

A summary report of the inputs received online will be published shortly after the Consultation, and the Global Review Panel will consider this report as it formulates its recommendations.
