Defeat-NCD Partnership, UNOPS propose technical assistance for non-infectious diseases

Defeat-NCD Partnership and UNOPS have proposed to provide technical assistance for non-infectious diseases, according to Ministry of Health and Sports.

Defeat-NCD Partnership wants to sign a MoU with Ministry of Health and Sports to provide technical assistance for the implementation of sustainable tasks, the availability of inputs and funds, shift to the community-based pattern, seeking ways of cooperating with the government and private organizations and the implementation for non-infectious diseases.

The Union Minister said the ministry has given priority to non-infectious diseases, especially hypertension and diabetes. Rural health care centers across the country open community health clinics every Wednesday to share knowledge on non-infectious diseases and health care for the aged. He urged it to provide the ministry with Rapid Need Assessment Tool and technologies to rapidly know the burden of non-infectious diseases and prevention and treatment.

In Myanmar, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) has topped the list of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases, with 40 per cent, according to WHO Global Health Estimates.

The CAD accounts for 39 per cent of the death rates among Myanmar men, cancer for 21 per cent, other chronic diseases for 24 per cent, chronic lung and respiratory diseases, for 12 per cent, diabetics for four per cent. The CAD accounts for 45 per cent of the female deaths, cancer and chronic lung and respiratory diseases for 17 per cent each, other chronic diseases for 14 per cent and diabetics for seven per cent.

Since over a decade, the outbreaks of non-communicable diseases have been on the rise due to foods and changing lifestyle, according to the Public Health Department. Obesity, heart disease and fatty liver disease are found among the middle-aged people.
