Venerable disease?

That potential possible drop in national HIV prevalence has been placed right up at the top of this article. Quibbling about prevalence consumes too much energy among epidemiologists. Do we others need to be constantly exposed to it?

The luminaries at the New Light of Myanmar should recognise that sexually transmitted infections, although old, are hardly ‘venerable’ as they refer to them in the final paragraph.

Meeting on Enhancing Media Awareness on HIV control held
New Light of Myanmar
13 January 2007

The Ministry of Health is giving priority to control of TB, malaria and AIDS.

In collaboration with experts from UNAIDS and WHO, the ministry held a workshop in 2004. The workshop estimated that there were 338,911 people who are infected with HIV and AIDS in Myanmar.

A similar workshop was held in 2005. The workshop estimated that the prevalence rate of HIV in the nation has been decreased from 1.5 per cent in 2000 to 1.3 per cent in 2005.

The prevention and control of HIV and AIDS was carried out along with foreign experts in 2006. Under the National Strategic Plan drawn in 2006-2010, measures for control of HIV are being taken in cooperation with the UN agencies and social organizations at home and abroad.

With the sponsorship of the Health Department, National Aids Programme (NAP), UNAIDS and UNIC, a meeting on Enhancing Media Awareness on HIV control was held at the Summit Parkview Hotel here at 10 am today.

It was attended by officials from the Health Department, Information and Public Relations Department, News and Periodicals Enterprise, Myanmar Radio and Television, UNICEF, UNAIDS, NAP and UNIC, correspondents from Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club, chief editors of journals, writers Chit San Win, Ma Sanda and Than Myint Aung.

The participants touched upon information on measures being taken for control of HIV and venerable disease, communications between departments, local authorities and media, conducting media courses on disease control, recording progress of work carried out, writing news, articles and stories on prevention of diseases and TV and Radio coverage.
